Nicaragua is often described as the land of lakes and volcanoes, and with nearly a fifth of the country protected as either a national park or reserve, no trip can avoid being packed full of wildlife, birds, butterflies and stunning scenery.
The trip begins in the cooler coffee growing regions of the northeast, where you will learn about the difficulties facing rural communities. A cup of freshly roasted coffee with members of SOPPEXCCA is not to be missed as they talk about their fair-trade and organic coffee, and the support that they receive from Christian Aid.
As you travel south you will visit the Spanish colonial city of Granada, take a boat trip on Lake Nicaragua, and visit a project giving business training to women, before stopping at the coastal fishing village of San Juan Sur.
From here you will enjoy the beaches of La Flor, an important reserve for sea turtles as well as many other species of animals and birds. On your way back to the capital the tour stops to hear about the Lutheran Churches of Nicaragua’s work in the fight against the spread of HIV. The trip comes to an end in Managua with an evening of local food and music.
